Tonight, I went with Heather to the GBC staff Christmas dinner. While it was obviously a month off track, it was a great time tonight. We also had a “Happy Birthday” sing for Heather..her birthday was Jan. 6th.
I spent time with people I genuinely enjoy being around and that always makes dining out even better. You know those staff events that are filled with forced conversation and what-not? None of that jazz with my crew.
We went to a Japanese steakhouse and I threw some Sushi…good freaking Sushi!
You ever have one of those “I’m gonna’ work on my diet/lifestyle on Monday so I’m gonna’ blow it out this final weekend” experiences? This was mine! I ate so much that I about burst the buttons on my shirt. Think I’m exaggerating? Not a chance. Painfully stupid…and totally worth it! Heather, a seafood hater, even likes Tempura Shrimp rolls..so she had some too. Our friend Robin had her first Sushi experience and rocked it right off the bat! First time I had Sushi was during my Guardian audition. I went with Tony and Stryper’s Oz Fox to a joint across the street from Robert Sweet’s house. I was mortified when I saw it. I got sick thinking of it. I chickened out and had something else while Tony and Oz threw down. I’m glad my limited mid-western mindset started to expand later that year as I discovered Sushi was absolutely amazing and became my favorite. I had a similar experience with Indian food. David Bach took me to Niki’s Tandoor in Tustin, Ca., a place he still visits every time he heads back to the west coast. I hated it. I declared that everything tasted like Lemon Pledge cleaner. I don’t know why that was my reference point, but it was. 2 years later, I tried it again and was floored. I’ve been hooked ever since.
Does this ramble have any point? Yeah, even though it started as a mind-dump, it does actually…
It was once considered heresy to believe that the Earth revolved around the Sun.
People once declared the earth was flat.
I once declared that I hated Sushi.
I once declared that I hated Indian Food.
All of these things turned out to be false.
If I had stuck to the decision that I hated Sushi…I possibly would have missed out on this awesome evening with friends. Something that trivial 20 years ago could have affected today.
Don’t ever stop learning, don’t ever stop growing, don’t become numb to the amazing things happening right before your eyes.
Love wins!
